While in Stockholm last week, I was able to try Marcus Samuelsson's Street Food restaurant. Samuelsson's fast food joint is located inside the main train station. I had read about it on a blog a while ago and was curious to try it. Although I have never really been a fan of Marcus Samuelsson, I thought the concept of this particular restaurant was really interesting. I have always had a deep love for street foods and kind of arrived at Street Food with high expectations. And I was disappointed.
First of all, it's not cheap. Compared to other fast food options, it's even pricey. I felt like I was paying more for the name and the cool decor than for the food itself.
Also, my husband and I were really disappointed by the food. The supposedly super American BBQ ribs tasted nothing like what you would get in the USA. I also don't consider BBQ ribs as being ''street food''. The Bombay chicken wrap tasted fine but was more like a wrong western world interpretation of what Indian street food is like. The Teriyaki noodles were somewhat confusing. It was a mix of noodles, grilled chicken, teriyaki sauce, Iceberg lettuce, peanuts, and fried onions. They didn't taste Japanese at all but they ended up being the yummiest dish we got.
One interesting thing at Street Food is the choice of condiments you can choose to add to your meal. In the middle of the large tables (that you will share with strangers), there is a wide selection of mustards, spices, and sauces from different parts of the world. The only problem I saw is that not all those condiments seem to fit with the foods from their menu.
All in all, my experience at Street Food was more disappointing than enjoyable. What could have been a really interesting fast food joint was rather a pricey but cool place with not so authentic (but still healthier than normal fast food) food options. Marcus Samuelsson should maybe stop trying to put his name on so many different things and try to focus on a few good things. Just a thought...
